A transparent variety of crystallized quartz that typically is purple or violet in color. In an interesting note, the word amethyst comes from the Greek word "amethystos" meaning "not drunk", and it was believed to prevent its wearers from intoxication. Many attribute amethyst the ability to strengthen the endocrine and immune system while having a good effect on right-brain activity, the pineal gland, the pituitary gland and some think it has an exceptional ability to cleanse blood and energize the overall system. The VALENTINE STORY Some experts state that it originated from St. Valentine, a Roman who was martyred for refusing to give up Christianity. He died on February 14, 269 A.D. , the same day that had been devoted to love.
